The unprecedented levels of flooding which hit the Shannon region late last year were under investigation at a meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on the Environment, Heritage and Local Government on Tuesday this week.
Representatives from the Office of Public Works, Waterways Ireland, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Central (Shannon Regional ) Fisheries Board, ESB, Bord Na Mona, IFA, and the Heritage Council appeared before the committee.
County managers from across the Midlands, including Westmeath county manager Dan McLoughlin, were in attendance to address how flooding can be better managed across the region in the future.
The meeting’s deliberations will contribute to a report the committee is compiling which will consider what preventative measures can be implemented to restrict the damage caused by adverse weather.
