HSE urges public to adhere to visiting restrictions

The HSE is asking members of the public to continue to adhere to visiting restrictions in place at the Midland Regional Hospital at Mullingar, due to the recent outbreak of the winter vomiting bug at the hospital.

In order to assist staff in curtailing the spread of this potentially dangerous virus, which is particularly unsafe to both the very young and the very old, the HSE says it is imperative that no visiting takes place during this period.

In an effort to reduce the spread of the virus, people are asked not to visit patients in hospital, including the emergency department, unless absolutely necessary. If the visit is necessary only one person at a time must visit, and refrain from moving from one section of the hospital to another.

Children should not visit patients in hospital during the current period, and people should only attend emergency departments if necessary. If you are visiting, please make sure you clean your hands as often as possible while in the hospital. Infection control procedures are in place and will remain in place until further notice.

If you or a member of your household has experienced nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhoea within the last 48 hours, the HSE asks that you do not visit the hospital as you risk spreading the virus to sick, vulnerable patients, some of whom are on treatment for serious illnesses.

The HSE is recommending members of the public who are experiencing these symptoms to first phone their local GP before presenting at the local practice. If you are due for admission and have any of the symptoms, or any of your family has same, please inform the hospital prior to your admission date.

The HSE would like to thank the public for their cooperation in this regard.
