Speed limit to be lowered at Coralstown junction

A speed limit of 100kmph is to be applied to the stretch of the Mullingar to Dublin M4 motorway at Coralstown junction, after councillors approved new bye-laws for the road this week.

As the road is designated motorway, it currently has a speed limit of 120kmph; however, due to safety concerns stemming from a lack of visibility at the junction, it is felt the speed limit needs to be lowered to 100kmph.

The council’s senior roads engineer Michael Connolly told councillors at Monday’s meeting that there had been no objections during the public consultation process to the lowering of the speed limit.

The new limits will apply for a stretch of 40 metres on the eastbound carriageway from the Coralstown junction, and 310 metres in advance of the junction for motorists heading west.

Councillors united in welcoming the move, which was approved by Cllr Aidan Davitt and seconded by Cllr Mick Dollard.

However, Cllr Denis Leonard said he felt the section of motorway would still not be safe with a speed limit of 100kmph, while Cllr Frank McDermott wondered whether the new speed limit would be observed.
