Judge John Neilan has criticised a man who showed “arrogance” to the Probation Services.
George Donegan missed one of his six appointments, was late for two and turned up intoxicated for another.
The judge said he was not prepared to have the Probation Service running around in circles after Mr Donegan, who has a 22 month sentence in place since his last appearance in court when a probation report was ordered.
He added that “any reasonably prudent observer” would be unimpressed if they saw Mr Donegan “falling up the street” and would question what happens in court.
People would think that the court “rolls them in and rolls them out again,” he said, referring to people who are brought before the court but do not improve their behaviour.
“That doesn’t happen in my court,” he added.
Mr Louis Kiernan said his client had stayed out of trouble since his last appearance and had improved considerably.
He had started “from a very low base,” he said of his client who is on medication. “He has come a long way, but has a way to go yet,” he added.
Mr Kiernan said his client was due for a medical review on April 20 and suggested the results of the review would benefit the court.
After getting a commitment from Mr Donegan that he would turn up at all his appointments and complete urine samples when required and engage in education and training, the judge adjourned the case for six weeks to March 25.
