Golden Island raises €4,000 for Midlands Simon

Golden Island Shopping Centre has once again shown its support for the local community by joining forces with the Midlands Simon Community to help raise some much-needed funds towards the fight against homelessness.

Over Christmas and new year in Golden Island, over €4,000 was raised from the Santa’s Grotto and Christmas Crib, which was donated to Midlands Simon. The funds raised will go directly to the organisation and their fight to eliminate homelessness right across the Midlands.

CEO of Midlands Simon, Tony O’Riordan, said “As we all know last year was a very difficult year for everyone. It is especially difficult for those with no home. As a result of increased demand for all our services we needed the help of all our supporters even more. We would like to say a huge thank you to all those who very generously donated in Golden Island, and especially to Tony McDermott and all in the shopping centre for their simply fantastic support.

“It is only with the kind of support shown by Golden Island that Midlands Simon will be able to continue to provide essential services to those experiencing homelessness. For that we are extremely grateful. It is fantastic to see such willingness on the part of the business community to support those in the local community who need help.”

He added, “We would also like to highlight the very significant support we received from State agencies throughout 2009, and acknowledge the fact that the Government has committed to maintain the level of funding in the budget for homeless services at the same level as last year. In a time of unprecedented financial difficulties this shows a clear willingness on the part of Minister Finneran to tackle the issue of homelessness and also to try to insulate the most vulnerable from the worst effects of the recession.”

Midlands Simon helps people to move out of homelessness by providing emergency accommodation, supporting people to source accommodation, assisting people to move into their new home, and providing a range of supports to people to help people maintain their new home. Midlands Simon also helps people to overcome the many other issues faced by those who are homeless such as health and welfare needs, poverty, loneliness, and isolation.
