A row after a funeral has seen a Mullingar man get a three month sentence for threatening, abusive behaviour.
Judge William Early said it was “intolerable” that a person commit public order offences in the manner that Joseph Nevin did on July 1.
At 7.15pm that evening gardaí received a call regarding a number of people in a row at Cathedral View.
Joseph Nevin, who was shouting from behind the wall of 35 Cathedral View became very aggressive and jumped the wall when Garda Scott Kahler spoke to him.
He continued shouting, looking for a fight, Inspector Kieran Keyes told the court.
Of Mr Nevin’s 61 previous convictions, 30 are for public order offences committed as far away as Macroom, Cork and Portlaoise.
Mr John Quinn said his client had been at a funeral in Navan but returned with others to Mullingar where they began drinking.
He said the 43-year-old father of five had taken the pledge in August, after being barred from all licensed premises in July.
He had calmed down in custody and was then co-operative, he said.
When Judge Early asked if the row had been a major incident, Inspector Keyes said it was minor in scale but big incidents had been going on at the time.
Describing Mr Nevin’s behaviour as intolerable, he jailed him for three months. He has appealed the sentence following the lodgement of €750 to the court.
