Tributes paid as Westmeath roads claim victim

Tributes were paid this week to Robert ‘Robbie’ Naughton (36 ), of Oaklawns, Mullingar, who died in a single-vehicle road traffic collision on Tuesday.

Another of the car’s occupants remains in a serious condition in hospital following the incident.

Mr Naughton was fatally injured when the car he was travelling in left the road and collided with a pole at Muleady’s Cross on the Mullingar to Ballynacarrigy Road, at about 1.30am on Tuesday morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the emergency services.

Mr Naughton, who was well known in Mullingar and worked in Dunnes Stores in Harbour Place for several years, was the only son of Mr and Mrs Paddy Naughton of Oaklawns.

Two other men, both in their 20s, who were in the car at the time were treated for their injuries at the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar. The condition of one of the men is described as critical.

Gardai say no other vehicle was involved in the incident, and that the collision happened when the red Hyundai Getz car Mr Naughton and two friends were travelling in left the road and crashed into a pole.

The road was closed off on Tuesday morning and diversions put in place to allow Garda collision investigators to carry out examination of the scene.

Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to contact Mullingar Garda station at (044 ) 9384000 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666111.
