It’s time for a springclean

Spring is in the air and Co Westmeath Tourism Ltd is encouraging people to springclean Westmeath.

Two free seminars focussing on supporting Tidy Towns Groups and people who would like to get involved in Tidy Towns are being coordinated by Co Westmeath Tourism Ltd. The first seminar will take place on Tuesday February 23 at 6.30pm at Belvedere House, Mullingar.

This event is part of the Aontas National Adult Learners Festival which takes place throughout the last week in February. The theme for February 23 is “Green Learning Day” which will be mirrored at the seminar.

The Springclean Westmeath seminars are free to attend and open to everyone already involved in Tidy Towns and those who would like to get involved in an existing group or setting up a new one. There will be a follow-up seminar on Thursday March 11.

“The seminars are a great opportunity for people to find out more about what financial support is available, hear some expert advice and the success stories of two national Tidy Towns winners,” says Rhona Rogers, Co Westmeath Tourism Ltd.

“There are many advantages to getting involved in Tidy Towns such as personal reward gained from working as a volunteer, a social aspect of being involved with your local community, and pride in your local area, as well as economic benefits to businesses. It is hoped that by highlighting the importance of having tidy towns and villages that more people will get involved and ultimately our county will be more attractive to visitors,” continued Ms Rogers.

Representing Ireland’s tidiest village and the current national award winner, chairperosn of Emly Tidy Towns Committee, Sharon Heffernan is delighted to be invited to participate and will give a presentation at the seminar on Tuesday February 23.

A follow up “Springclean Westmeath!” seminar will take place on Thursday March 11 at Belvedere House, Mullingar. The theme of green learning will be continued on this evening also. Invited speakers will give presentations on the use of wildflowers, making the most of our natural and built heritage, and there will be a detailed presentation on suitable planting, irrigation systems and lots of practical advice from John Smyth, master gardener at Belvedere House. A spokesperson from Ennis Tidy Towns committee will give an insight into their journey to success.
