Former Mullingar town council candidate, Brian Fagan, is preparing to travel to Haiti on behalf of GOAL.
The experienced GOALie has just returned from the Ukraine where he was working as an election monitor with the Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE ).
“I couldn’t volunteer to help GOAL in Haiti before now because I was in the Ukraine, but I’m just back and there’s work to be done in Haiti,” said Brian (49 ).
He will be working as a logistician with GOAL in Haiti where an earthquake on January 12 left an estimated 200,000 people dead and millions in desperate need of food, shelter, and medical aid.
“My family have given me their full support, everybody knows what has to be done,” said Brian.
Brian ran as an independent candidate in the local elections last year. He ran a two-week campaign and fell short of election by just 19 votes. Now he has given his vote to GOAL, and will join the team of over 30 doctors, nurses, engineers, and logisticians in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince.
“GOAL is a great organisation, it’s efficient, practical, gets the work done, and is flexible enough to be able to respond to any emergency,” said Brian.
Brian has a long association with GOAL as a fundraiser and field expert. He was the sole GOALie in Afghanistan in 2001 and 2002 supervising food distribution and providing shelter, and has subsequently worked in Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and the Democratic Republic of Congo for the organisation.
