A 30-year-old Dundalk man has appeared before Mullingar District Court charged with threatening the Mayor of Granard, County Longford.
It is alleged he told Mayor Tommy Stokes that he would kill him.
Edward Stokes, who has an address at 1 Villas Two, Edgeworthstown, faces charges of criminally damaging a red Audi A4 and threatening, abusive behaviour at Barrack St, Granard on October 13.
The mayor said he was a settled traveller who had topped the poll in the recent election and that Edward Stokes, his brother-in-law’s son, had difficulty with his family “just because we’re getting on”.
Edward Stokes was granted bail on condition that he not enter Longford except for court appearances, maintain a curfew between 10pm and 7am and attend no car auctions in the State.
He is also barred from making any contact with any member of the mayor’s family at any time and is barred from all licensed premises.
The case was adjourned to next month.
