Spring into spring with fantastic nights at Roscommon Arts Centre

Roscommon Arts Centre has launched its spring 2010 programme of events, bringing you the best in theatre, comedy, dance, music, workshops, and classes from the new year right through to Easter.

The Last Laugh Comedy Club has established itself as one of the monthly highlights at the arts centre and this spring is no exception. The unstoppable Neil Delamare’s brand new show Bookmarks on Wednesday February 10 is already booking fast. The ever-loveable Conal Gallen returns on Friday and Saturday February 19 and 20 with Laugh, Laugh Laugh, a show that will please both young and old.

Theatre lovers will once again be spoiled for choice with the spring programme. Roscommon Drama Festival 2010 (March 5-13 ), the line-up for which will be announced shortly, guarantees nine nights of the very best in amateur drama from groups from all around the country. Tickets for individual shows can be purchased, and the more dedicated theatre-goer can treat themselves to a season ticket at just €90.

The Dead School by Pat McCabe and produced by Nomad in association with Livin’ Dred Theatre Company returns for its only Irish performances on Friday and Saturday February 5 and 6 before travelling to the London stage later in the month.

Roscommon Drama Group bring Steel Magnolias to the stage from Thursday-Saturday January 21-23. Set in Louisiana, Steel Magnolias invites the audience to Truvy’s Home Beauty Parlour where customers discuss everything from small-town gossip to the more life-changing births, deaths, and marriages in a sparkling script peppered with acerbic one-liners.

Brian Friel enthusiasts are in for a treat with Splódor Theatre Company’s production of Dancing at Lughnasa on Tuesday March 2, while Sanctuary Players bring John McDwyers’ Callaghan’s Place alive on Friday and Saturday March 26 and 27.

Fans of John McDwyer and Beezneez Theatre Company will be delighted to see their production of Tuesdays with Morrie on Thursday February 11. Journalist and playwright Michael Harding travels to Roscommon Arts Centre on Thursday January 28 with The Tinker’s Curse, a moving story about a travelling man who climbs Croagh Patrick to do penance for the sins of a lifetime.

Phil Lynott fans are welcome to come along on Friday January 15 for Remembering Philo, a tribute night celebrating the late great Thin Lizzy frontman and raising funds for the Roisin Dubh Trust. The Reel Thing trad music evenings returns on Thursday February 18 with the fantastic duo Tommy O’Sullivan (guitar, voice ) and Paddy Keenan (uilleann pipes ).

Roscommon Arts Centre has also programmed a few treats for children including the Lambert Puppet Theatre’s Hansel & Gretel with an extra special appearance by Bosco (Saturday February13 ) and Dance Craze, a showcase of work by the talented students of The Peelo School of Dance, Roscommon (Saturday March 20 ).

Workshops and classes continue this season at Roscommon Arts Centre with Flex UR Feet dance classes for the over 50s (Wednesdays 11am ), trad music classes for children (Wednesday afternoons ), yoga, Roscommon County Youth Theatre, Theatre Time Drama classes, life-drawing classes, In-Step stage school, and much more.
