Fun run for flood relief

The team behind the annual triAthlone event are getting behind the flood relief effort in Athlone, with a 5km run being planned for next Sunday December 20.

With over 200 Athlone householders displaced as a result of the devestating floods, it is a crippling time for many families.

The group aim to raise at least €50,000 for St Vincent de Paul to assist with their aid effort. There is no entry fee for the run, as the sole goal is to raise as much money as possible from the event. Spot prizes and Christmas hampers have been donated by local businesses.

The idea is to have a field of at least 500 fun-runners, each raising €100 sponsorship, but the organisers say you can raise more or less than €100 - every little helps.

Participants of all abilities are invited to get involved and run - or walk - the 5km route, which starts and finishes at Athlone Regional Sports Centre. You can even come in fancy dress!

Numbered sponsorship cards are available now from the following locations: Athlone Credit Union, Athlone Regional Sports Centre, DB Cycles, the Flood Relief Office in Athlone Towncentre, St Vincent de Paul, and Trizone.

A collection team will be at Athlone Regional Sports Centre from 11am on Sunday December 20 to collect sponsorship cards/money and register entrants.
