New sculpture for Mullingar Town Park

Westmeath County Council have announced they wish to commission a new public art feature for the entrance to Mullingar Town Park.

It is envisaged that this art work will enhance the local environment and act as a focal point for those living in the vicinity and visiting the town. The sculpture will be located at the front entrance to the town park on Austin Friars Street.

In July 2009, Westmeath County Council advertised the commission and received over 50 applications from national and international artists. A selection panel has assessed the applications and has drawn up a shortlist of five pieces. Scale models of the five shortlisted sculptures are currently on public display in The Atrium, County Buildings, Mount Street, Mullingar, from now until December 15.

The council invites members of the public to view these scale models and to submit written comments and feedback with a view to making a final selection in late December. The artists were asked to consider the culture and history of the town in developing their submissions. Full details of all five submissions, along with specifications, accompany each model on view.

This scheme is funded by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government’s Per Cent for Art Scheme through the Mullingar Sewerage Improvement Scheme, whereby a percentage of Government-funded capital costs is ringfenced for an art project.
