Tubberclair dig deep in Walsh Island

Tubberclair 1-6

Walsh Island 0-7

Not for the first time in recent weeks Tubberclair turned around a half time deficit thanks to a sterling second-half display to emerge victorious at the long whistle. To do so in the back garden of the Offaly champions Walsh Island adds further merit to the achievement.

Trailing 0-6 to 0-3 Tom Lennon’s men would have been content at the break knowing that they had the aid of the elements in the second half. The sending off of influential Ross Connor just before halftime was a significant loss to the home side.

Tubberclair were quick out of the blocks in the second half and a Fergal Wilson free was followed by an all-important goal from the boot of Francis Spollen. This put his side into a lead they would hold onto, albeit with numerous scares before referee Fergal Barry brought a halt to proceedings.

While it was an impressive team performance, Garry Connaughton’s heroics between the posts lit up an otherwise gloomy day. The Westmeath number one broke the hearts of the Offaly men with a string of fine saves that included a second-half penalty save. His performance no doubt inspired those in front of him to dig deep and their collective efforts were rewarded.

They now take on Kildare champions Maynooth, most likely in Maynooth on Sunday December 6.

Having accounted for the Wicklow, Dublin, and now Offaly champions, the men from Glasson will make a bold bid to bring a long and hectic year to a successful conclusion.
