Midlands Youth Orchestra to play lunchtime Christmas concert

Westmeath County Council is delighted to host a unique lunchtime Christmas concert on Tuesday December 8 at 1pm in the Atrium, County Buildings, Mullingar.

The Midlands Youth Orchestra, formed in 2006 from a number of youth ensembles around the Midlands, features young people aged between 12 and 19. Under the baton of Vincent Hunt, they have already performed at the National Concert Hall and in various locations across the region.

Last year the Midlands Youth Orchestra played host to the Jugend Sinfonie Orchestra, a German Youth Orchestra from Bremen, Germany, when they partook in joint master classes and concerts in Mullingar and Birr. This summer they accepted an invitation to travel to Bremen in Germany on a return exchange with the German orchestra.

The philosophy of the Midlands Youth Orchestra is to allow access to music for young people of all ages on the sole criteria of their ability, and not their financial means, and thus, hopefully, to be as inclusive as possible. The orchestra is funded by Westmeath County Council in association with Offaly County Council, Laois County Council, Westmeath VEC, Midland Arts and the Arts Council.

This will be a unique opportunity to see an indoor concert by the Midlands’ newest musical phenomenon in Mullingar’s award-winning landmark building. Playing a mixed programme of classical compositions from a vast repertoire including Mozart, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Leroy Anderson, amongst others, this could be the concert of the season.

Admission is free and all are welcome.
