Mullingar retailers launch ‘Super Tuesday’ recession-beater

In an attempt to lure business into the town in the run-up to Christmas, retailers in Mullingar have got together to come up with a novel idea which they hope will entice customers to spend their money in the town this festive season.

‘Super Tuesday’, which kicked off in Mullingar this week, allows retailers the opportunity to come up with imaginative ways of offering the best possible value and promotions to customers, and runs for all four Tuesdays in November.

The idea came about when an extensive cross-section of the town’s business owners convened in the Greville Arms Hotel recently to discuss issues such as plans for Christmas lights for the town. Armed with the belief that Mullingar boasts a uniquely strong retail mix, representatives of the town’s business community expressed enthusiasm and support across the board and the initiative was launched on Tuesday this week.

For the remaining Tuesdays of the month, participating outlets displaying the ‘Super Tuesday’ poster will boast an array of special offers instore.

According to John Cochrane of the Greville Arms Hotel, the promotion aims to highlight the unique offering of Mullingar as a business town.

“Mullingar has one of the strongest high streets in the country. We had a business meeting, and came up with the idea of this ‘Super Tuesday’ promotion. We want to generate business and positivity in the town,” he explained.

“We were very busy ourselves last Tuesday. We had an offer of free tea or coffee when you buy an item in the coffee shop, and we gave a free €5 voucher for Ulysses bar to anyone who bought lunch. We had a very positive reaction. The offers are all very decent; some shops are offering 25 per cent or 50 per cent off certain items.”

Martin Swarbrigg of Unique Boutique added that the promotion drew a “great buzz” into the town on Tuesday this week.

“There were loads of people in town and there was a great buzz; people were anxious to come in and see what was going on. We sent texts out to 300 customers and were very happy with the promotion. We offered 25 per cent off a French designer label on the day,” he says.

“Each week we will be offering different special offers and surprise discounts instore. We are delighted with the response.”

Other outlets taking part in the ‘Super Tuesday’ promotion include Brown Owl Coffee Dock, The Fish Market, Roma Cafe, Subway, Tatters Boutique, The Fashion Shop, Olynes Lingerie, Fagan Office Supplies, Maxol Filling Station, Kenny Cycles, Swarbrigg Shoes, Caffreys Bar, Fraynes Home Bakery, The Druids Chair, Unicare Pharmacy, Whelehans Pharmacy, Hugh Daniels Menswear, and many more besides.
