One year ban from licensed premises in Mullingar

Judge John Neilan told a Mullingar defendant that he would not “sit idly by and see offensive language being used towards members of An Garda Siochana”, at the local court last week.

James Teague (46 ), 9 Donore Drive, Multyfarnham, was fined €500 when he was convicted of using or engaging in threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, at Mount Street, Mullingar, on July 28. A charge of being intoxicated on the same occasion was taken into consideration. The defendant pleaded guilty to the offences.

Garda Butler said in evidence that Gardai received a telephone call from Spin niteclub to say that a male was being held by security. The witness said that when she spoke to the defendant he became violent and used abusive language towards her and the security staff. The witness got a smell of alcohol of his breath and he was unsteady on his feet.

The court heard that the defendant, who has a previous drink driving conviction, was a former stonemason.

Teague had not been in that niteclub before. He had been ejected by the security staff but did not know why. When the garda arrived on the scene, the defendant was being physically held down by the security staff. Judge Neilan made an order excluding the defendant from all licensed premises in his district for the next 12 months.
