This evening’s race meeing at Kilbeggan racecourse has been cancelled due to a waterlogged track.
The racecourse was deemed unfit for today’s meeting after officials at the Westmeath race venue examined the racecourse early yesterday morning.
However, spokesperson for the Irish Turf Club, Cliff Noone, confirmed yesterday that the National Hunt fixture has been rescheduled for next Friday, September 11.
“The racecourse was inspected this morning and was found unfit for racing due to waterlogging. The event has been resceduled for next Friday,” said Mr Noone.
The news of the cancellation may come as no surprise to weather-watchers, as Met Eireann confirmed this week what many had suspected: this year’s summer was the wettest on record.
Mullingar recorded its wettest summer since records began back in 1950, while other parts of the country recorded the highest levels of rainfall since 1866.
