Following a successful first year the committee of Athlone Film Club is hard at work preparing for the upcoming autumn/ winter season which marks the club’s first anniversary. The new season will also see the launch of a website for the club which will be launched in the upcoming weeks.
The club was established in September 2008 with the support of the Dean Crowe Trust with the aim of giving local audiences the opportunity to see a range of world and classic cinema, not usually available on commercial cinema screens. Affiliated with Access Cinema, only the very best of films are screened by Athlone Film Club and significant film research is done prior to film selection each season.
In the last year in the comfort of the Dean Crowe Theatre, audiences were enthralled by a cinematic journey that took them as far a field as Afghanisatan and Mongolia. The Club is also eager to promote Irish films, last year screening the acclaimed Jigs and Reels staring Ronny Drew . The upcoming autumn / winter season will also feature a selection of Irish made films.
From September, films will be screened every second Tuesday at 8pm in the Dean Crowe Theatre and Arts Centre, Athlone. Prior to each screening complimentary wine is provided in the Theatre Bar where you can chat, relax, and discuss the forthcoming films.
Since the club’s inaugural season in 2008 Athlone Film Club had established itself as one of Ireland’s fastest growing film clubs and has become a well known part of Athlone’s vibrant social scene. With 150 members and growing, the Film Club shows a varied selection of films with members participating in the selection process. Students from Athlone Institute of Technology will have an opportunity to join the club at the annual Clubs and Societies day in the College in September.
The Film Club has also attracted members of varying nationalities and cultures and this is reflected in the multi-cultural themes of the films we show.
The autumn/ winter Season 2009 will commence on September 15 and runs every second Tuesday to December 2009. Details of the films and new website will be revealed in the upcoming weeks. A facility to join our mailing list will be included.
If you have any queries about the club email [email protected]. Becoming a member is easy, just join us at the Dean Crowe Theatre and Arts Centre when we launch our opening film on September 15.
