Mullingar has been chosen as the fourth location in the Lakelands and Inlands region to host an open day showcasing what is on offer in the area. Organised by Fáilte Ireland, Waterways Ireland, Westmeath County Council and a committee made up of local businesses, the open day will take place on Sunday September 27 from noon to 6pm and will provide an opportunity to raise awareness of the tourism assets of the Mullingar region.
Dara O’Reilly-Daly, managing director of Dara Marketing and chairperson of the Discover Mullingar organising committee said: “Discover Mullingar is a great opportunity for the local community to uncover what is on offer on their doorstep and in turn allows them to become knowledgeable ambassadors for visitors. The success of similar days that have taken place in Athlone, Carrick-on-Shannon, and Enniskillen leads us to believe Mullingar has the potential to be equally, if not, more successful.”
Activities planned for the day include a historical walking tour of the town, water activities on the canal, fishing demonstrations, a food fair, face painting, street fair amongst other great activities. “We’re just in the early stages of organising the event so the range of events on offer will increase,” continued Dara.
The Discover Mullingar initiative is part of a broader campaign to develop and promote Ireland’s Lakeland and Inland Waterways which aims to significantly boost visitor numbers to the Lakeland regions over the next three years.
