Get out there and enjoy your heritage

Look we’re all broke. Bored. And hopelessly depressed. Let me know if I’m wrong about that, but I doubt I am.

So in the spirit of all things recession it’s time we looked to what’s around us, and more importantly what’s fun and free! A perfect example of this is our upcoming Heritage Week. There will be lots of events going on across the county from lectures, and walks, to days out in hertiage locations.

Most events are free, educational, and perhaps something you wouldn’t have considered doing this time last year. But then again this time last year we were all off sunning ourselves. Oh how things change!

If you don’t fancy being lectured about old stuff there are other options for Heritage Week. A national photo competition is also being held, so dust off your lens and get snapping.

Use your imagination to capture the connections between people, the environment, and heritage during National Heritage Week and share these experiences by uploading your images to www.pix.ie/go/heritageweek between August 22 and September 13.

Up to five photos can be submitted into each of the three categories; natural heritage, built heritage and cultural heritage. Photos in each category will be judged on originality, creativity, and a demonstrated understanding of the theme of National Heritage Week, “Be part of it, it’s part of you”.

Speaking about the competition, head of communications and education at the Heritage Council, Isabell Smyth said, “We are delighted to announce details of the first National Heritage Week Photo Competition. With over 1000 events taking place across the country during the week, there will be no shortage of opportunities for people to get out and take some photos of their heritage”.

“Photos can only be uploaded to http://pix.ie/group/heritageweek once National Heritage Week has kicked off on August 22. When submitting your photo, don’t forget to tell us what Heritage Week event you took it at, why you like it and why you think it could be a winner,” added Smyth.

Prizes will be divided into three categories of Adult (over 21 ), Youth (13-21 ), and Junior (7-12 ) and include an Irish Landmark Trust Weekend Voucher for a stay up to the value of €700, €300 gift voucher from Great Outdoors, ‘Do not handle with care’ Olympus Tough 6,000 camera, €55 family heritage card, €50 Amazon.co.uk gift certificate, and €50 Eason bookshop gift certificate.

OK so it might not be a week in the Algarve, but it’s one way of getting out and about instead of moping about at the weekend.

And you never know, you might be the next David Bailey!
