Three men have been arrested by Athlone Gardai following the theft of €20,000 worth of jewellery from Blacoe Jewellers in the town centre on Tuesday this week.
In what was described as a “distraction theft”, the culprits managed to distract the shop assistant for long enough to make off with a few valuable items of jewellery worth approximately €20,000.
The heist occurred at around 2.30pm on Tuesday afternoon, and it is believed up to four people may have been involved.
One male suspect was arrested later that afternoon by Athlone Gardai, while a further two males were arrested on Wednesday.
All three suspects were brought to Athlone Garda station where they were questioned, and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Gardai believe a fourth person may have been involved in the robbery, and are appealing to any witnesses or anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the vicinity to contact them at (090 ) 6492600.
