Mullingar Chamber is delighted to announce that its vouchers are now to be sold all year round at Mullingar Credit Union, instead of only during the busy Christmas period.
The voucher scheme is a non-commission based service offered by Mullingar Chamber with the aim of encouraging people to ‘Shop local -shop Mullingar’. Vouchers can be purchased in denominations of €10, €20, or €50.
The vouchers can be used in a range of outlets around the town, from local hairdressers to hardware shops. With €140,000 worth of vouchers sold last year, the chamber wishes to urge local consumers to use these vouchers as gifts and help to ensure that money is spent and kept locally.
A list of almost 90 participating businesses is issued with the voucher to advise the purchaser where they can spend the vouchers.
Shopping local is of great importance to the whole community, and the chamber is encouraging locals to consider the real cost to a local economy when companies close down.
Small local business employ a wide range of supporting services such as printers, sign makers, cleaners, and accountants. With the closure of one small outlet in a town such as Mullingar, the local supporting companies lose a customer, and of course the staff directly employed lose their positions.
The ripple effect this can have on a local economy is very real, and while the closure of one outlet can have some effects, the closure of several outlets can be devastating to a local economy.
