“Ye Gardaí are just on a big power trip,” a drunken man shouted at Mullingar Garda Station after he was arrested for public order offences.
Anthony Farrell first ran away when he was observed acting “very aggressively” by gardaí while they were on mobile patrol.
When he was caught on Oliver Plunkett Street at 2.20am his eyes were bloodshot and he was “highly intoxicated”.
He had a lot of previous offences dating back to 2007, Mullingar District Court heard.
Mr Louis Kiernan emphasised that his 26-year-old client’s “bad record” of previous public order offences was a number of years old and “he is much more responsible now”.
He had been out with his pregnant partner who wasn’t drinking when an argument broke out between him and a family member.
“Emotions were high,” Mr Kiernan said, and offered an apology to Gardaí and the court.
A man who had always worked, Mr Farrell, who has an address at 8 Ledwiths Town, Ballymahon, had been laid off and found himself in difficult circumstances, he added, and requested that the judge give him a chance.
Judge Eamon O’Brien imposed a two month sentence which he suspended for two years.
