Prison for verbally abusing shop staff

A Mullingar man has been given a one month prison sentence for public order offences.

Patrick Nevin (20 ) of 174 Dalton Park pleaded guilty to an offence outlined by Garda Brendan Minnock at Mullingar District Court.

The Garda said that at 5.35am on August 19 2007 there was a report of windows broken at Mr Nevin’s home.

When Gardaí arrived, Mr Nevin and others were on the road and there was tension when another family arrived. A fight broke out involving Patrick Nevin and John McDonagh. Punches were thrown and Gardaí had to intervene.

Garda Byrne told the court that on March 3 2008 at 1.35pm Gardaí were asked to respond to reports of a disturbance at Buckley’s Supervalu.

On speaking to a member of security staff, they were told a male had entered and been verbally abusive. Mr Nevin was identified on CCTV.

Garda Byrne said numerous attempts were made to contact him but he was never at home. When he was eventually contacted by phone, he declined to make a statement.

Mr Nevin accepted he was out of line, the court heard, and the sentence imposed on Garda Minnock’s charges is to run concurrently to a two year sentence he is serving for assaulting Jason Dinnegan in October 2006 and causing him harm.

That sentence was imposed at the Circuit Court in May of this year.
