A very successful fancy dress night was held recently at Mullingar Rugby Club. This was part of the tag rugby tournament which runs until the end of July. The teams had to play their games dressed in their chosen attire. This can be difficult depending on the outfit.
From pirates to nuns and smurfs, there was a great selection of inventive outfits. Some noses, wigs, and moustaches fell off during play but luckily no one was injured. Water pistols proved very popular, with some opposition teams getting rained-off very quickly.
The 10 teams competed in a round-robin blitz with each team playing five games of 10 minutes in length. The beginners’ teams got some good practice in by playing the more advanced teams.
The winning fancy dress team was the Jammie Dodgers who were elegantly dressed as pirates and they definitely scared off the competition. In close second place came the A Team who were dressed as revolutionaries. No-one could understand how their black berets managed not to budge during the fierce battles on the field.
A BBQ and disco followed the event with the well-dressed tag players showing they can prove their prowess on the dance floor.
Although the night was great fun there was a worthwhile motive behind the event. Some €500 was raised for Tri-To-Beat-Cancer to provide critically needed funds to support cancer research at St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin. A number of tag rugby players are taking part in the Tri-To-Beat-Cancer triathlon, and they are wished every success in this local sporting event.
On Thursday last there was great excitement as the Six Nations and Triple Crown trophies were on display at the rugby club. A great turnout of players, children, and interested rugby fans came to get their pictures taken.
There are only four weeks of the tag tournament left and more details will follow on the finals night.
