Bail for terminally ill man

Judge Neilan has granted bail to a terminally ill man who has 20 previous bench warrants.

Mr Louis Kiernan said that Ciarán Thompson of 31 Newlands, Mullingar had attended court 46 in Dublin on June 15 and had become unwell and was out taking his medication when his case was called.

His solicitor was working between two separate courts on the day also, he said.

Garda Michael Daniels, who arrested Mr Thompson on foot of the bench warrant relating to a charge of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, said he was aware Mr Thompson had quite serious health issues.

Mr Kiernan said he would have medical reports for the “seriously ill gentleman” but hadn’t been expecting him to be brought in on a bench warrant.

Judge Neilan said he had no issue regarding the medication but indicated that he had full confidence in the competency of the Dublin solicitors employed by Mr Thompson.

He granted bail to appear at Court 46 this week.
