Southern Gaels held a most enjoyable Myths and Legends event in Pairc Chiaráin recently.
The event was organised by Irish Language and Cultural Officer Mickey Moran and was well attended by a large number of young club members and their parents.
The theme of the event was based upon how Cu Chulainn, Ireland’s most famous hurler, got his name. Mickey read the Cu Chulainn story, local poets Jackie Gorman and Christina De Brún recited poetry and Fiona Moran, a local illustrator ran a workshop on how to draw Cu Chulainn.
The evening was hosted by the Healthy Club Officer Irene O’Neill and there were plenty of fruit treats for all. The next cultural activity will be a Scór Talent Night in June.
Under 14 Hurling League
Southern Gaels 3-6 Delvin 6-14
Southern Gaels hosted Delvin in Round Six of the U14 Division Two league. This game played in Pairc Chiaráin and saw the visitors record a well deserved victory. Delvin took an early lead with a couple of goals and never relinquished that lead. Despite superb saves by our goalkeeper Nathan Quigley and some excellent defending by Eoghan Hardiman and Conal Lambe the Gaels also shipped a number of goals in the second half. Aodhán Fallon and Sam Meegan got through a huge amount of work during the games and took some brilliant scores between them.
All County League Division Two
Castletown Geoghegan 3-19 Southern Gaels 1-10
Played in Castletown, the home side were deserving winners. Southern Gaels had a poor first half, due to lack of match practice and trailed by 2-10 to 0-3 at half-time to a well drilled Castletown team. However, Gaels really improved in the second half. They played with much more gusto, held on to the ball better and distributed it more creatively.
The forward line got some good scores throughout the half. There are four remaining Division Two league matches and Gaels need to pick up four points to survive in the division. The remaining games are against Clonkill, Crookedwood, St Brigids and St Oliver Plunketts.
There was a welcome return to MJ Kelly, out injured for over a year.

St Brigid’s 1-12 Southern Gaels 1-17
A late goal from Padraic O’Neill ensured Southern Gaels had a deserved victory in this fixture played in Rochfortbridge last Friday. Others to play well were Rory Hatton and Liam O’Flaherty.
Southern Gaels 0-19 Fr. Dalton’s 1-6
Gaels had a deserved home win in last Sunday’s encounter. Sean O’Donoghue was star of the show with an incredible seventeen points. He was majestic throughout from frees and from play. Brian Gill and Aaron Murphy added the other points. Dara Geary had a superb game in goals.
