Few music fans would dispute the inclusion of Oasis and AC/DC in any rock ‘n’ roll hall of fame. One would assume that any band lucky enough to support either of these rock giants could be safely declared to have hit the big time.
But to support both bands within a week of each other - well that’s the stuff dreams are made of.
Proving that it’s not all that long a way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll, The Blizzards have been added to the bill to support AC/DC when they play their much anticipated Punchestown Racecourse gig this Sunday.
Fresh from a high energy set that went down a storm with the 80,000 Oasis fans at Slane last Saturday, one would forgive the Mullingar rockers if they fancied keeping a low profile until their appearance at Oxegen on July 11.
Not so for the local lads. When Thin Lizzy drummer Tommy Aldridge broke his collarbone in a cycling accident, causing them to pull out of this Sunday’s AC/DC gig at Punchestown, The Blizzards were only too happy to step up to the plate.
They now have the honour of opening the show for AC/DC in front of 70,000 fans, before northern Irish band The Answer take to the stage to welcome the Australian metal legends.
Although the offer of the spot came “out of the blue” for The Blizzards, they are promising to give it everything they’ve got on Sunday. As they admit themselves: “You wouldn’t ever say no to an offer like this!”
