Westmeath senior footballers maintain their promotion hopes as Antrim defeated in Belfast

A four point victory in Corrigan Park on Sunday afternoon ensured Westmeath senior footballers maintained their unbeaten Allianz National Football League Division 3 record and sustained their quest for promotion come the conclusion of the county’s seven game campaign.

In scoreboard ascendancy for the vast majority of the contest, Westmeath manager, Dessie Dolan, will be pleased to have achieved the victory, one which will enhance confidence and build momentum with just two league fixtures to play.

In the previous victory over Limerick in TEG Cusack Park eight players contributed to Westmeath’s winning tally and on this occasion, 10 players ensured their scores were pivotal to the Lake County’s success on Sunday afternoon.

One victory from Westmeath’s remaining two games, at home to Down on St Patrick’s Day and away to Sligo on March 24 would ensure promotion and the initial goal achieved prior to the start of the Leinster senior football championship on April 7.

Free scoring Down (who also remain undefeated ) sit at the summit of the division prior to their visit to Mullingar on Sunday week (throw in, 3pm ) and having scored 10 goals to date, the Westmeath defence will have to be fully concentrated over the duration to ensure a platform from which victory can be achieved.

With momentum continuing to grow and a home support in fine voice, Westmeath will be hoping to maintain their unbeaten run and secure a place in the division final due to take place in Croke Park on the weekend of March 30.
