Community ethos was the prevalent theme at a recent support fund presentation ceremony hosted by Athlone & Castlerea Credit Union (ACCU ) in The Bounty.
Reflective of their consistent and cohesive community contributions, 32 voluntary organisations from Athlone shared a support fund total of close to €40,000 which will assist the progression of current and future endeavours within the local environment.
The primary objective of the community support fund is to support the development and delivery of worthwhile projects to the benefit of members and the local community within Athlone and its immediate environs.
The community groups who were announced as recipients of such funding during the well attended presentation ceremony were Moate Men’s Shed, St Hildas Services, Maryland Tang GAA, Castledaly GAA + LGFA, Goldsmiths GAA, Monksland United FC, Athlone Tennis Club, Kiltoom Drama Group, Athlone Canal Heritage Committee, Athlone Gun Battery Heritage, Athlone Golf Club, Athlone Athletics Club Juveniles, Garrycastle GAA, St Francis FC, Mount Temple Holy Trinity Graveyard Group, Croi na hÉireann, Athlone Drug Awareness Group, Feile na Sionainne, St Patricks Residents Association, Athlone Christmas Market Committee, Buccaneers RFC, Garrycastle GAA Community Initiative, Athlone (Midlands ) Rape Crisis Centre, Infinity Friends, Clonflanlough Hall Committee, Churchwood residents association, Athlone District Girl Guides, St Patricks Residents Association, Athlone Little Theatre, Glasson Tubberclair Community Group and St Peter’s FC.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Mr Michael Evans, CEO of Athlone & Castlerea Credit Union, stated that the support funding would further enhance Athlone and paid due compliment to those volunteers who continue to contribute to their respective communities.
“We are delighted to support community and volunteer led groups in the Athlone area and we know that the funding will come as a welcome support. We are very proud of our ethos of social responsibility and community development here at ACCU and we are looking forward to seeing all of these projects develop in the coming months,” Mr Evans remarked.
Emma Sammon, chairperson of Athlone & Castlerea Credit Union and Community Support Fund committee member, noted that the funding allocated would continue to help, support and grow the community spirit in the Athlone and its immediate environs.
“These funds will be of huge benefit to the community clubs and charity organisations. The funding will ensure that they can continue the important work they do in the community. We hope that this community support fund will continue to help, support and grow the community spirit here in the Athlone area.
