There was recognition on the world stage for three students from Moate Community School, their fashion creativity having achieved the Junk Kouture World Designer of the Year award at a ceremony hosted in Monaco.
#TagMe, the creation of Eva Donlon from Tubber, Ballymore’s Méabh O’Shea and Evie Nugent from Mount Temple was selected as the best design at the Junk Kouture Global Final as the overall winner.
The three students returned to Moate Community School on Tuesday afternoon a guard of honour forming to welcome the acclaimed fashion designers.
Speaking upon their return, Evie Nugent stated that the trio were still in “disbelief”, winning such an award on the world stage being so “unexpected”.
Sixty haute-couture designs made completely from recycled materials graced the catwalk in Salle des Princes in Grimaldi Forum, Monaco, #TagMe duly receiving the plaudits upon the conclusion of the judging process.
The Moate CS students’ project comprised of more than 2,500 plastic colour samples from various plastic objects which were then hand sewn together. Such samples usually end up in landfills as the different colours make them difficult to recycle.
Supported by Moate CS teacher, Pamela Keogh, the winning design was inspired by famed designer Missoni and made from plastic colour testers from Delta Q, a plastics manufacturer located in Athlone.
Junk Kouture is a fashion competition which challenges schools to design, upcycle and create high quality sustainable fashion from recycled junk.
