Delivering transformative water services in Athlone and throughout County Westmeath enabling local communities to thrive remains a top priority for Uisce Éireann.
Part of ensuring that a robust and resilient water supply is produced every day in the Lake County, includes driving down the amount of clean, treated water lost to leakage.
Working in partnership with Westmeath County Council, Uisce Éireann has replaced almost 29kms of old and problematic water mains with new, modern pipes. Within the Municipal District, such works have taken place on the Lower Road from Marist College to Killion Hill, on Coosan Point Road and in Mount Temple.
The completed projects are enhancing a robust and resilient water supply for homes and businesses across the county.
The delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme is ensuring security of supply, reducing leakage, and ensuring that a more sustainable water supply is at the heart of the county’s water network. Westmeath is also benefitting from a very high level of infrastructural improvements in water services, receiving vital investment for water and wastewater upgrades.
Outlining the benefits of the national Leakage Reduction Programme in County Westmeath, Dave Murphy, Project Manager at Uisce Éireann stated that many of the old and problematic pipes were prone to bursts and high levels of leakage, causing supply challenges for homes and businesses.
“Replacing them with modern pipes reduces the amount of drinking water lost through leakage and brings an all-round improvement to the water network for Westmeath communities.
“Since being involved in the national Leakage Reduction Programme across Westmeath, I have seen first-hand how efforts to tackle leakage have benefited local communities. These projects have resulted in significant leakage savings providing a more resilient and robust supply of water for local communities,” Mr Murphy commented.
