The illegal dumping of deceased ewes into a ditch on the Tully Road in Baylin has been condemned by local councillor, Frankie Keena.
“I am deeply angered and disgusted by the actions of the person who illegally dumped two dead ewes into a ditch on the Tully road just outside of Baylin village, an area which is regularly used by the public for recreational walks.
“While the majority of people were enjoying and celebrating the festive season with family and friends, this particular individual was mainly focused on removing the two deceased ewes from their land as quick as possible,” Cllr Keena stated.
The councillor stated that environmental actions of such an occurrence was vast with the possibility of contamination into a stream close to where the ewes were dumped.
“The environmental implications of this action are serious as apart from the horrendous smell of their decaying flesh, the ewes were dumped beside a water course which will most definitely cause contamination to the stream as it makes it way to Lough Ree.
“The mindset of this individual who disposed of these ewes in such a way is very hard to comprehend. I have notified the relevant authorities about this illegal action and have requested them to immediately remove and dispose of these ewes in a proper manner.
“I have also requested them to try and trace their ownership as Department regulations clearly states that all sheep must be tagged in accordance with the rules set down under the National Sheep Identification System. This person needs to be identified and fined accordingly,” Cllr Keena concluded.
