Congratulations to Southern Gaels player, Cian McCarthy, who is currently training with the Westmeath senior panel and made his debut against Dublin in the Walsh Cup.
Unfortunately Westmeath lost the encounter played in Parnell Park. Their game against Antrim due for Kinnegad fell foul of the weather last Sunday and is unlikely to be replayed. The league fixtures commence away to Galway in Salthill on Saturday, February 3.?
Roscommon Senior Team
Congratulations to club player, Chulainn Dowd, who made his senior debut for the Roscommon seniors in their Connacht League victories against Sligo and Leitrim recently. However, they lost the semi-final to Mayo and the Shield Final to Galway. Chulainn joins his brother Sean as a Roscommon county player.
Under 12 Referees Wanted
The club must supply two referees for Under 12 hurling games for this coming year. Persons interested will receive full training and referee’s gear and it will ensure that Under 12 games will go ahead. Games will be every second Friday beginning in early March and all duties will be in Athlone or local areas. Anyone interested please contact Kevin Jordan 087 7989941.
National GAA Draw
Tickets at €10 each for the National GAA Draw are available through the club. All monies raised will go to Southern Gaels with the GAA supplying all prizes. Please support your club and purchase a ticket. Contact any committee member or club mentor.
Club Shop
Southern Gaels have secured a premises for a club shop in the Blyry Industrial Estate. This will be open weekly once training recommences. All mentors will have full details and times of opening. All club gear, hurls, sliotars, helmets, jerseys, togs, tops, jackets, socks, etc will be on sale. There will also be the old club retro jerseys on sale from all sets from the 1970s up to the 2010s, so any player could get the jersey he often wore if he gets in first to purchase it.
Teams for 2024
With hurling and now camogie firmly established in the club there will be a number of teams involved for 2024. Camogie teams will be entered at Junior, Under 18, Under 16, Under 14 and Under 12 levels. There will also be Go Games for camogie at Under 10 and 8 levels.
Hurling will have a Senior League Division Two side with both Intermediate and Junior teams competing in the championships. At juvenile level there will be teams at Under 18, Under 16, Under 14 and Under 12. There will also be Under 10 and 8 Go Game teams.
Both camogie and hurling will have an academy for players from five years of age up to start them off on their sporting careers, so there will be a team for all age groups.
Get into hurling/camogie and enjoy the sport and fun for 2024. Training for most underage groups will begin in late February.
