A civic reception will be bestowed upon the Athlone Town playing squad to mark their historic achievement in winning the FAI Cup in Tallaght Stadium recently.

Confirming the news to the Athlone Advertiser on Wednesday, Cllr Frankie Keena, who mooted the suggestion at a recent meeting of the local authority, said that it was fitting that such an honour be bestowed upon the club following this historic victory.

“The fantastic success achieved by the Athlone Town women’s football team in winning the FAI Women’s Cup continues to ripple throughout Athlone and wider Midlands region. Those whom I meet are so proud of this marvellous team which is ably captained by Laurie Ryan and managed with excellence by Ciaran Kilduff.

“In fact, full credit has to go to the chairman, executive, staff and volunteers of Athlone Town FC for their continued commitment to this great club. As its membership continues to grow the club work tirelessly to improve facilities for all players.

“I am now delighted to announce that my request to Westmeath County Council to bestow a civic reception on this fabulous women’s team, who represent Athlone Town FC with great pride, has been approved.

“A civic reception is the highest honour that can be awarded by a local authority on an individual or group and Westmeath County Council will now be in touch shortly with Athlone Town FC to make the necessary arrangements,” Cllr Keena stated.
