Striving to achieve successive appearances in the women’s FAI Cup final, Athlone Town will journey north-west to play Sligo in a final four fixture on Saturday evening, kick-off 6pm.
History was made in 2022 when the Athlone senior women’s team claimed a place in the end of season showpiece fixture under the guidance of former manager Tommy Hewitt.
New first team manager, Ciaran Kilduff, will be hoping to replicate such an achievement on Saturday evening, his charges being favourites for the fixture in The Showgrounds. The teams sparred recently in the league, Athlone Town emerging victorious and a similar scoreline on Saturday evening will be most welcome by the visiting team.
Athlone’s league form has improved under the new management team, Town winning three of their previous four games following the summer season break and based on such progress a place in the FAI Cup Final is very much a possibility.
Current cup holders Shelbourne play Shamrock Rovers in the second semi-final, a fixture which also takes place on Saturday evening, kick-off 4pm.
