The spirit of triathlon was wholly vibrant in Coosan Point this past weekend with the return of the Lough Ree Monster Triathlon, hosted by the Athlone Triathlon Club.
With abilities ranging from complete beginners to seasoned professionals, 127 participants descended upon Coosan Point to swim, bike and run and earn the chance to say, “I tamed the Lough Ree Monster”.
The atmosphere was tinged with momentary anxiety and laden with anticipation as participants awaited the sound of the starting klaxon.
With the support of the local community Gardai and the Athlone Sub Aqua Club and approximately 40 marshalls looking after all athletes, a morning of epic racing and proud finish line moments ensued.
The event, which is entirely hosted by club members and volunteers, and sponsored by many local businesses, has grown in reputation over the years as a friendly, welcoming and encouraging event experience for each participating athlete.
The sheltered swim and undulating bike and run routes allow the more experienced racers to push the limits while the new to trathlon participants can enjoy a challenge that’s safe, fun and supportive.
A truly fantastic day of sport for Athlone, all congratulations are afforded to each finisher and to the volunteer members of Athlone Triathlon Club.
