The Southern Gaels junior camogie team played their third game of the championship on Sunday last against Clonkill and if there were marks for effort the squad would all receive ten out of ten!
Unfortunately, that is not the way it works and while the scoreline suggests something of a whitewash it was far from it with the teams evenly matched throughout, the more experienced Clonkill team taking their scoring chances while Gaels failed to positively impact from an offensive perspective.
Nonetheless, all in attendance were in agreement that the progress being made by this fledgling team is remarkable and with the bare minimum fielding due to injuries and work commitments the performance was praise worthy.
Oliver Plunketts provide the opposition when Gaels return to playing action on Saturday.
Under 15 Championship Final Division 2
Fr Dalton’s 5-11 Southern Gaels 3-4
Played in Tubberclair in glorious sunshine last Saturday the Ballymore side had a deserved victory. Gaels led 2-3 to 1-5 at half-time but Fr Daltons eased to victory with an excellent second half scoring 4-6. The Athlone side, hampered by a number of injuries gave a huge performance but couldn’t sustain their efforts. Well done to all the team and mentors.
Under 11
The club’s Under 11 side played a challenge against Castletown Geoghegan on Friday last in Pairc Chiaráin. Both sides enjoyed a wonderfully entertaining game full of skill and commitment. They will have a return game in Castletown in a few weeks time.
Intermediate, Under 19 and Under 17 teams
The club’s Under 17 side play Cullion/Delvin this Saturday in TEG Cusack Park Mullingar at 12pm in the Division 2 Final. The club are seeking their third title in four years having previously won silverware 2020 and 2021. The side have already captured the league title and are chasing the double.
The Under 19 team are in Division 2 championship semi-final action and are hoping to retain the title they won last year.
The Intermediate side are assured of a semi-final spot ahead of their last group game this weekend against Raharney. They have a very young side who have shown great potential and have all progressed through the club’s juvenile system bar thre
