The Southern Gaels intermediate team won their first silverware of the year with an exciting victory over Dublin Civil Service in the Maher Tournament played in Athlone last Saturday.
The team’s ability to score points proved crucial as nine players got on the score sheet. Gaels led throughout and it was fitting that they captured their own tournament in their 50th anniversary year.
Veteran Tommy Murphy, a selector with the side, started the match and fired over a point in the first quarter to give the impetus for the victory. Kieran Duncan was majestic at full back with Luke Whelan impressive in only his second start. All three Dowd brothers got on the score sheet with Fionn getting the all important goal in the opening half. The Martin brothers, Cillian Geary and Cian McCarthy also played pivotal roles in the victory.

Fresh from their Division Two league success the club’s Under 17 side found their Offaly opposition a significant challenge. A lacklustre first half left them too much to do as the visitors found the net with regularity just before half time. Gaels recovered in the closing quarter and notched up a Kyle Mahon goal and a number of points from Oisín O’Donoghue, Cillian Geary and Max O’Sullivan to finish impressively. Sean O’Neill, Ruairí Ó Duibhir, Matthew Turner and Aaron Power also played well throughout.
Hurling Festival Week
There was a wonderfully successful Family Fun Day in Pairc Chiaráin last Sunday as part of the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations. A huge crowd enjoyed a sun-drenched afternoon of games and events with children and parents entertained all afternoon. The Southern Gaels Festival Week continues until Saturday with a golf outing taking place in Athlone Golf Club on Friday, while later that evening there are Under 10 and adult camogie matches and Under 9 and Under 13 hurling fixtures planned in Athlone GAA from 6.30pm.
The Festival concludes on Saturday with a Gala Dinner Dance in the Sheraton Hotel from 7pm. GAA President, Larry McCarthy, will be in attendance on what promises to be a great night of hurling celebration.
Go Games
Both juvenile camogie and hurling side played a series of Go Games last weekend. The Under 10 girls played against St Oliver Plunketts and Castletown Geoghegan and had wonderful evening of play. On Saturday the Under 7, 9 and 11 boys all played Raharney. Garrycastle club kindly facilitated the games and all enjoyed their hurling. Thanks to all players, mentors and parents for their help.
