Despite a weekend of contrasting results on ACFL finals weekend in TEG Cusack Park, Mullingar, both Athlone GAA men’s teams will compete in higher divisions when the competitive league season returns in 2024.
The club’s Division 5 team tasted defeat by the minimum in their final contest with Coralstown-Kinnegad on Saturday evening.
Athlone dominated possession throughout, however, some wastefulness in possession and in front of goal cost them dearly in the end. Athlone looked to have gained the momentum with a John Connellan goal followed by a Mark Egan equaliser, only for Kinnegad to win the following kick out and, against the run of play, score a late winning point.
There was a different outcome on Sunday evening at the same venue when the men’s Division 2 team claimed victory with a merited three point win over Milltownpass.
This was another tough game against a resolute Milltownpass outfit but a strong second half showing enabled Athlone to pull clear in the last 10 minutes and get their hands on the trophy.
There was great support at the game with two buses departing Pairc Chiarain to cheer the lads on to victory.
