A further piece of Southern Gaels history was created last week as the club’s first ever U12 camogie team competed in its inaugural league match against Delvin.
A total of 18 girls togged in jersey and skort to represent the club on a beautiful sunny evening. The girls worked hard and made Delvin work for every score and while the final tally wasn’t what was wanted, the great play was more than could have been hoped for.
Thanks to the parents for supporting this new venture for the club – super enthusiasm and positivity for getting more and more girls involved in our great native sport.
Trip to Tipp and victory for U15s
It certainly proved to be a fantastic week for the club’s U15 playing cohort recently. On Sunday, May 21, they took a trip to Tipp, to play Seamus Callanan’s home club Drom & Inch.
The team had 25 players taking to the field and had a great competitive match, losing out narrowly by a goal. Management and players received great hospitality from their hosts before all headed for Semple Stadium to watch Limerick v Tipperary and were served up a cracking match which ended in a draw.
Including children and parents, a total of 40 journeyed on the trip to Tipp with all involved looking forward to future excursions. On the following Tuesday, this team played a challenge game against Padraig Pearse’s from Roscommon and were well beaten, but numbers were low. However, they learned a lot and needed to put it all into action on Friday as they had a league match v Delvin and won a scoreline of 4-13 to 3-5.
On Sunday, May 28, they played their last league match against St. Brigids. Again, it was a hard-fought affair with the team in arrears at half time, Brigid’s scoring 1-1 soon after the throw in. They battled hard to overcome that six point deficit and get the scores on the board to emerge victorious on a 3-16 to 3-7 scoreline. That completed a fabulous fourth match in just over a week, with some great experience been accumulated.
The league campaign has now concluded, the team finishing in third position, having lost only to the finalists, Cullion and St. Vincents. A week of rest now for the summer exams and best of luck to all those sitting junior certificate exams.

Membership fees are now due and can be paid for on the Foireann app. The best value is family membership with entry into the club’s monthly draw with great money prizes on offer. Remember, players cannot line out for their teams unless membership is paid.
