In their first game of the year Southern Gaels enjoyed a comprehensive win over Roscommon Gaels in difficult conditions at Pairc Chiaráin last Friday night.
On an historic night for the club with three Martin and three Dowd brothers playing the home side were always in control. In a low scoring first half the Athlone side led 0-5 to 0-2 but with Eanna Holland and Diarmuid Martin in control in defense and Eoin Hardiman and Cian Geary to the fore in attack they dominated the half.
Southern Gaels played against the wind in the second half but scored 1-8 to 0-2 and showed great teamwork. All three Dowd brothers got on the scoresheet with debutant Johnny Martin in exceptional form scoring four points from play. Conn O'Hara made his debut for the senior side in goals while Evan Farrell, Ryan Fallon and Paul Hogan contributed handsomely throughout.
The league begins in a fortnight and the side is training hard in anticipation of a successful campaign.

Juvenile Training
Underage training for hurling and camogie is now in full swing every Sunday in the Gael Scoil beside the Regional Sports Centre. The academy for all up to seven years of age is hosted from 2pm to 3pm, U9s to 11s from 3pm to 4pm and 13s/14s is from 4p, to 5pm.
All are welcome and hurls and helmets will be provided to all newcomers. Older age groups will return shortly and will be informed by mentors.
