This year marks the start of the Southern Gaels camogie era with numerous club teams officially competing in Westmeath GAA competitions as 2023 progresses.

To acknowledge this new chapter in the club’s history, Glenveagh were announced as Southern Gaels sponsors for the newly formed U10 and U12 camogie teams at a jersey and skort launch in The Bounty last week.

Southern Gaels are celebrating 50 years of hurling in Athlone this year and are hoping to start five decades of camogie from 2023 on with teams being established at every age level from U6 to adult grades. The U10 and U12 teams are seen as pivotal in establishing a strong platform for playing and promoting camogie in the town and the support from Glenveagh in their inaugural year has been very well received.

Glenveagh are major supporters of grassroots sport in areas where they build, which includes a number of upcoming developments across the Midlands including Athlone and Mullingar.

The sponsorship from Glenveagh has allowed Southern Gaels to invest in camogie jerseys and skorts for the growing number of girls playing the game at the U10 and U12 levels with the club. All Southern Gaels camogie teams will participate in official Westmeath camogie events and competitions which will start from April. All teams participating must wear jerseys with the official Camogie Association crest and must also wear skorts and so the Glenveagh support is invaluable and timely from the outset of this exciting development for club and community.

The new Glenveagh-sponsored jerseys were on display at the launch and six members of the U10 and U12 teams paraded the gear proudly, all eager to get into some camogie action as soon as possible. No doubt their pristine status won’t last too long but all in a worthy cause!

Attending the launch on behalf of Glenveagh, Martin Fitzgerald, Community Relations Executive for the company commented on the enthusiasm of the players in attendance and wished them success with their very first camogie season.
