Athlone Town start League of Ireland season with enticing local derby in Longford

The Athlone Town men’s senior team will be hoping their end of 2022 season form continues when the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Division 1 campaign starts on Saturday night with a visit to Longford Town (ko, 7.30pm ).

A local derby is certain to entice supporters of the club to make the short journey to Bishopsgate this weekend as management duo, Dermot Lennon and Gordon Brett, aim to build upon the positive form shown by the team at the end of the 2022 league season.

Athlone tasted defeat on just one occasion in their closing six games of their 2022 league campaign and will travel to Longford on Saturday with the hope of sustaining such impetus as the club looks forward to achieving a more rewarding season.

New signings have been made with the hope that the team gels swiftly, early victories are achieved and momentum builds. Seven league wins were achieved from 32 games played in 2022 so to surpass that target is the obvious initial goal and if achieved, a tilt at securing a play-off berth is certain to drive the playing squad and management as the season progresses.

Athlone Town will host Finn Harps in their first home game of the season at Athlone Town Stadium on Friday, February 24 (ko, 7.45pm ).
