An FAI Intermediate Cup quarter final fixture now awaits Willow Park following a memorable victory in the capital on Sunday.
The Leinster Senior League Senior Sunday 1 team retrieved a one goal deficit to secure success over Bangor Celtic who ply their league trade in a superior division to that of their Athlone opponents.
Trailing after 70 minutes, the introduction of substitutes, Mark Sherlock and Callum Lynch, proved pivotal, Sherlock assisting both goals in his cameo appearance.
With seven minutes remaining in the contest, Sherlock assisted Scott Delaney who levelled proceedings and with full time imminent, Sherlock combined with Ryan Carberry, their neat interplay allowing Lynch to score the winning goal much to the delight of the travelling faithful.
Willow Park, having already secured a place in the 2023 FAI Senior Cup draw, now have an illustrious quarter final occasion to look forward to, the DPD Park based club returning to league action on Friday night with a home fixture against Kilbarrack United, kick off 7.30pm.
