Reports of crime during the Halloween period were minimal, a local Garda Sergeant has confirmed to the Athlone Advertiser.
Speaking on Wednesday morning, Sergeant Andrew Haran, stated that calls received from the general public mainly related to fireworks and small fires.
“While we were very much active visiting local areas with regards to fireworks and fires, there was little action from a criminality perspective. There wasn’t a single issue of criminal damage to any local properties which is very good news,” Sergeant Haran stated.
The Sergeant noted that calls received at the Garda Station were from residential estates where concerns were to the fore relating to fireworks use and escalating noise levels.
“It’s not particularly nice if you are elderly and vulnerable and you are hearing the explosive sounds caused by fireworks, but we were expecting such a scenario from a garda perspective,” Sergeant Haran added.
The Sergeant also commended council staff, noting that they had been helpful in removing materials destined for bonfire use in the days prior to Halloween.
