Consultants, engaged to develop a Wayfinding and Interpretation Strategy for Athlone, will market Athlone as a university town as part of this process, members of Athlone-Moate Municipal District were informed this week.
Responding to a question from Cllr Frankie Keena, who requested an update on the council executive’s discussions with TUS Athlone campus to assist them market the town as a university town, members were informed that advice from the tourism and wayfinding consultants is that there are significant opportunities for Athlone being marketed with a focus on Athlone as a historic medieval town with significant heritage attractions and tourism activities.
“The uniqueness of Athlone’s history and geographical location provides opportunities for wayfinding, storytelling and marketing of the town as an attractive and unique town in which to visit, live, work and study. Athlone’s status as a university town will be considered in the hierarchy of attractions for the Wayfinding Strategy,” an executive spokesperson stated,
