A request to rename the roundabout at Garrycastle Spar to ‘the Garrycastle roundabout’ was detailed at the most recent of Athlone-Moate Municipal District.
Raising the motion, Cllr Frankie Keena stated that he had received numerous representations from local residents requesting that the roundabout be renamed to that proposed.
In response, the council executive stated that ‘the members of the Municipal District previously approved to name this roundabout ‘Altown Roundabout’ and it was also approved to name the roundabout to the south of this one ‘Garrycastle Roundabout’ as it was closer to the ruins of the castle.
‘It is a matter for the members to agree to amend what was agreed at that time if they so wish. However, the executive would recommend that the members not amend that which was previously approved. The map circulated as part of that process is attached for ease of reference. The Municipal District have yet to identify a source of funding to erect all the signs on the roundabouts identified as part of that process.’
