Returning to its roots, County Westmeath will come alive with the traditional sounds of Irish music and dance for one week as Mullingar hosts Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2022.
Commencing on Sunday with an official opening from President Michael D Higgins, ‘The Homecoming’ will evoke memories of 1951 when the County Westmeath town hosted the inaugural Fleadh Cheoil na hÈireann.
Fleadh Cheoil na hÈireann is the world’s largest annual celebration of Irish music, language, song and dance, this year’s event expecting to attract in the region of 500,000 visitors to the host town and wider Midlands region.
Prior to the start of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2022, Joe Connaire, chairperson of Westmeath Comhaltas and of the Fleadh Committee, thanked the members of the Ard Comhairle for putting their trust in Mullingar to host this magnificent event.
“We are deeply honoured and humbled by the ringing endorsement we have received from the Ard Comhairle of Comhaltas, both in the town of Mullingar and in the members of our voluntary committee who have put in a huge amount of work to get us to this day.
“We are bringing the Fleadh back to its roots, back to where it all began, and back to where our great organisation was founded. Finally, I would like to welcome everyone from all corners of the globe, to celebrate with us at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Mullingar,” Mr Connaire asserted.
As the Mullingar and wider Midlands region prepares to embrace this prestigious occasion, prepare for traditional Irish music, song and dance entertainment on a grand scale. With two gig rigs erected and the promise of impromptu live street sounds, a short trip to Mullingar may be in order from July 31 to August 8!
